Sheng qi (生气) is one of 8 fundamental bases of energy in 8 mansions feng shui.

It is also one of the 4 favorable energies, often agreed to be the most auspicious among the quartet.

In English, Sheng Qi (SQ) is often called a variety of names including life generating qi, life force, growth energy, prosperity sector, wealth direction, creation palace, success sector, etc.

The reason for this diverse set of terms is due to it’s name 生气. The word 生 can be translated to mean growth, birth, life, to rise, raw, etc. While the word 气 can be translated to air, energy, weather, energy, etc. But 气 is generally agreed to mean energy force in feng shui. It’s the word 生 that different masters interpreted differently.

It should be noted that as a term of 2 words, 生气 is a term that describes the state of getting angry in common Chinese conversation. But in feng shui, this 2-worded term is split into two words with a combined meaning instead of meaning angriness.

Yet despite the term, it is accepted that Sheng Chi is an energy source that is associated with wealth, success, progression, achievement, authority, etc. The underlying theme is sustained growth. So in terms of 8 mansions feng shui, this is the sector that is most appropriately considered as the wealth sector or wealth palace in a house.

This is also an energy source that is linked to the wood element and the greedy wolf star (贪狼星).

The following table identifies the SQ direction with regards to the sitting of a house and a person’s kua number.

The technical approach to locating the SQ sector is to change the third yao line of the trigram of the house. Then identifying the directional sector associated with that trigram.

For example, a Dui house would be represented by ☱. By changing the third line (top), it would transform into ☰. This is the Qian trigram of the northwest. Thus, Sheng Qi sector and direction for a Dui house is at the NW.

As mentioned earlier, the SQ sector and SQ direction are generally referred to in the most positive sense.

However, the positivity is heavily linked towards wealth and success. This is not to say that it does not reap benefits in health, harmony and stability. It’s energy force is useful for these life aspects as well, but the luck of wealth and success would be most potent.

At this point it is important to note that the traditional wealth area is the Tian Yi sector. But in modern practice, SQ has taken on that role.

It is totally appropriate to plan almost all types of living areas in the SQ sector of a property. Saying that, it’s mostly used for common areas by homeowners who practice feng shui.

Having the toilet at the SQ area is akin to washing money luck down the drain. And having a store room there would be symbolic of being unable to achieve breakthrough in success. One can expect loss of job, tarnish of reputation, sickness, and even miscarriage when this sector is afflicted.

Thus, SQ is also the appropriate energy to tap on when one is seeking creativity, innovation, solutions, and essentially activities that has the goal of creating value which translates to wealth.

Since this energy promotes an active mind, locating a bedroom at this energy sector within a home can cause sleeping problems. The constant thinking about how to make money, innovate and create can keep you awake more often than you would like to admit. So unless you use the bedroom as a work area instead of using it purely as a rest area, then the bedroom is better located outside the SQ sector… if it is within your control.

Because 8 mansions has a deep affinity with directions, homeowners can sometimes have a main door situated in a bad sector of the house but remedy the affliction by building the door facing the SQ direction.

For example, a Zhen house sitting on East would have the below energy map.

If the front door can only be at the West where the Jue Ming (JM) sector is, then the main door can be constructed to face South because that is the direction of Sheng Chi. We can also apply the small tai-chi to locate door right at the SQ area within the JM sector.

By the same token, it is desirable to have windows or balconies facing the SQ direction and this enables the auspicious qi to enter the premises to benefit the residents.

When the SQ area is used for specific purposes, it is known to enhance the positive effects the user of the space hopes to achieve.

For example if it is used as a study room, then the user can get better clarity of mind to attain better comprehension. When used as a negotiating room, one can expect to consistently garner good outcomes. When used as an entertainment room, household members and guest can harness positive energy.
